The company said that a limited number of its old generation Pro series, sold between September 2015 and February 2017, contained batteries that “may overheat and pose a safety risk”.

Apple has advised customers using affected 15-inch MacBook Pro units to stop using the machine immediately.

The company in a statement said the customers could check for product eligibility and how to have a battery replaced through its website using the serial number of their device. The serial number can be found by clicking on the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen and choosing “About this Mac”.

“Because customer safety is a top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using affected units,” said Apple.

The company said the issue has been fixed in the latest models, released in 2019.

Customers are advised to exchange the faulty product free of charge.
