Bryce Dallas Howard admitted that she was nervous about playing Elton Johns mum in Rocketman.

The musical biopic delves into Eltons stormy relationship with his mother, played by Howard, which the actress described as toxic.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk at the premiere, Howard said: Largely the impact sadly was negative. They had a very toxic relationship which certainly informed the struggles that he went through.

Asked if she got any advice from the music icon, she revealed: No I only met him four days ago.

Because he was so involved in the development in the script, I understood that perspective and I wanted to talk to people who werent involved in the production who knew her, and that was incredibly informative.

Meanwhile John, who walked the red carpet at the premiere, previously praised star Taron Egerton and defended criticism about him playing a gay man.

Taron Egerton plays Elton John, Richard Madden plays John Reid and Bryce Dallas Howard plays Sheila in Rocketman from Paramount Pictures.

After watching the film at Cannes Film Festival, the singer reacted to the backlash, fuming: Thats all bulls***, Im sorry.

If people dont like it, review-wise, or it doesnt make one dollar, its the movie I wanted to make and thats all that counts.

I can look back and say, “You know what, I love it. I can live with it”.

Rocketman follows Eltons rise to superstardom, with Taron playing the lead role, opposite Richard Madden.

Viewers will get a glimpse into the 72-year-olds past – including his issues with alcoholism, drugs, and sex addiction.

The film had a warm reception at Cannes with star Egerton bursting into tears at the applause.

Rocketman is in cinemas 22 May.
